Local grocery chain O’Brien’s Market sold its Riverbank location to Cost Less Food Company.
O’Brien’s is currently holding a closing sale, all groceries are 25% off, which started July 1. According to a store manager, the store will officially close on Sunday, July 7.
O’Brien’s supermarket opened its first location in Modesto in 1978, and since then it has added two more stores — a Riverbank location in 1994 and a second Modesto location in 2002.
Both of its Modesto locations will remain open.
Cost Less Food Co. currently has 8 locations open in Northern and Central California; Riverbank will be its ninth.
Cost Less is hiring baggers, stockers and meat cutters for its new store. Applications can be found at costlessfoods.com/careers/.
O’Brien’s did not reply to a request for comment.
Since 1994 O’Brien’s Riverbank has built loyal customers who are sad to see the location close.
“O’Brien’s provided quality shopping with a small-town feel. We knew the staff by name, and they knew us. It felt comfortable shopping there,” Rich and Chris Holmer said in a Letter to the Editor. “You will be greatly missed.”
