WILMINGTON, Mass. —
A Massachusetts market that has been in operation for more than 65 years is now under new ownership.

Lucci’s Market in Wilmington has been purchased by McKinnon’s Supermarkets and will operate under the McKinnon’s banner. The owners of Lucci’s Market, John and Susan Lucci, are retiring.

John Lucci’s father, also named John, opened the original market with his mother, Midge, in 1956. John Sr. and Midge opened their market with the help of John Sr.’s parents, who emigrated from Italy in the 1920s and opened a small store in Stoneham.

Lucci’s Market is known for its deli and its homestyle meals produced by Susan’s Kitchen, which opened within the market in 2007.

McKinnon’s Supermarkets, home of the “Super Butcher Shop,” has been family-owned and operated since 1946. McKinnon’s has Massachusetts locations in Danvers, Everett and Salem, as well as another in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

“We hope to bring the best of the Lucci’s and McKinnon’s traditions together to the Wilmington location” Ed and Carl Penta, brothers and co-owners of McKinnon’s, said in a statement. “Lucci’s has been an important business in Wilmington for many years, and we hope to continue that tradition as an important part of the community there.”

The Penta brothers said they will bring their expertise and signature selection of fresh and marinated meats to Lucci’s Market. But they noted they will continue to operate the store much the same that John and Susan Lucci had, including keeping Lucci’s famous subs and sandwiches “just as they are.”

In addition, the Penta brothers said all of the current employees at Lucci’s Market will be employed by McKinnon’s.

“We are happy to be selling the business to the Penta Family and McKinnon’s. We feel very comfortable with their ownership style and know they will treat the customers, store and employees well,” John and Susan Lucci said in a statement.

McKinnon’s said it hopes to make the gradual transition from Lucci’s to the McKinnon’s brand over the next few weeks with a grand reopening as McKinnon’s Market in mid-July.
