Springdale-based Harps Food Stores Inc. announced Friday (July 11) that it will acquire James Super Save Foods, an independent grocery store in Mena. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

According to a news release, the transaction is expected to be completed by late summer. The James Super Save Foods store will close and reopen as a Harps store later this summer.

James Womble, owner of James Super Save Foods, recently told his employees that the store’s operations, employment and daily functions will continue with “minimal changes or interruptions.”

A Harps spokeswoman said the company plans to retain all the store’s existing employees. Harps has more than 6,500 employees.

“This is an exciting opportunity for our team and the community we’ve served for so many years,” Womble said. “I believe that under Harps’ ownership, the store will continue to thrive while maintaining the same level of dedication to our customers. I’m confident that our associates and customers will benefit from this transition.”

“We are thrilled to welcome James Super Save Foods into the Harps family,” said Kim Eskew, chairman and CEO of Harps Food Stores. “This acquisition reflects our commitment to expanding our footprint and providing excellent service in communities across the region.”

Harps is a 100% employee-owned company that operates 149 stores in six states, including Arkansas. Harps is the largest employee-owned company in the state and was founded by Harvard and Floy Harp in Springdale in 1930.
